Rear Mounted Bike Racks

Hitch Mounted Bike Racks

Hitch mounted bike racks are installed by sliding the rack into your vehicle's 2 or 1.25-inch receiver hitch.  A locking pin then secures the hitch rack into the receiver.  There are two main types of hitch mounted bike racks:

Platform Hitch Racks

Platform hitch bike racks carry your bikes with their wheels resting in separate trays.  The wheels are secured to the trays with rubber straps, and a padded arm holds the upper frame, so your bikes are held securely, and are protected from touching each other or the rack.  The platform hitch mounted bike rack is an excellent choice for carrying your bikes in a sturdy, safe and secure way to wherever you may wish to travel with them.

Hanging Hitch Racks

Hanging Hitch bike racks carry your bikes on fold-out arms that secure the bikes in rubberized cradles.  The bikes are held in the cradles by rubber straps, and additional straps keep your bikes from swaying and touching each other or the hanging hitch rack while riding.  Hanging hitch racks are easy to load and unload, and are a very popular choice to carry up to 5 bikes anywhere you wish to take them.

Both platform hitch mounted bike racks and hanging hitch mounted bike racks are strong, safe easy to use bike racks.  Over 70% of all rear mounted bike racks sold are hitch mounted bike racks.

Trunk Mounted Bike Racks

While hitch mounted bike racks are great choices for your bike carrying needs, not everyone owns a vehicle with a receiver hitch.  For those vehicles without a receiver hitch, a trunk mounted bike rack is the answer.

Trunk mounted bike racks are secured to your vehicle with reinforced straps and padded hooks, that attach to the top, bottom and sides of your trunk, hatch or lift-gate.  The straps are then tightened down to achieve a very strong and secure mount onto the rear of your vehicle.  Your bikes are secured into rubberized cradles and held in place by rubber straps, much as they are in a hanging hitch bike rack.

Trunk mounted bike racks do require that you regularly check the straps for tension, and tighten them as necessary, to keep the rack securely mounted to your vehicle.  Also, regularly check and clean the rubber feet that are in direct contact with the surface of your vehicle, to prevent paint abrasion.
